The Team | | |  | | James McBrien Managing Director James is the lead consultant and founder of Clearwater Advisors Ltd. He has spent a substantial part of his career developing people, working with CEOs and middle management groups in the UK, France, Hong Kong, Canada, Dubai and South Africa. His strengths lie in unlocking the natural personality of his clients when they communicate in order to make them more engaging and effective. His recent clients include: ABN Amro, Apax Partners, BBC, Hunton & Williams, Perot Systems, Royal Bank of Scotland, Shell International, UBS and Visa International. Prior to becoming a consultant, James facilitated performance-raising culture change programmes with The Pacific Institute. His first career was as an officer in the Irish Guards. In his five years, in addition to leading several expeditions, he also served on operational tours in both Northern Ireland and Bosnia. Whilst in Bosnia he was in charge of briefing the British General on media issues and co-ordinating the international media coverage of the first post-war elections. He was born in 1968, and graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science from Anglia Polytechnic in 1990. He has run the London Marathon three times. He also finds time to pursue a wide range of interests including: scuba diving, sailing, skiing, photography and guitar. He is married with three children and lives in Sevenoaks. He has recently worked on a number of highly successful leadership and communication programs in the railway industry including the award winning Practical Leadership Programme for Network Rail. Prior to that he served with the British Army where his focus was on training delivery and on helping countries on the transition from conflict to peace. His recent military experience includes harnessing military and diplomatic efforts in Iraq to ensure the safe handover of security responsibility to the Iraqi Government. He has also served with the United Nations in West Africa where he directly negotiated disarmament agreements with the local combatants. He is married and he lives in West London and the Cotwolds. His interests outside of work include skiing (a qualified instructor), dog obedience training and motorcycling. She spends 30 per cent of her time delivering leadership development programmes and business writing skills courses, but she is versatile and also has broad experience designing and delivering a range of management skills courses, performance management systems, assessment centres and training needs analyses. Lou tailors every course to clients needs. Recent clients are property, manufacturing, financial, computing and media sectors; participants have been directors and senior managers through to graduate recruits and secretaries. Topics include report writing, PR writing skills, general business writing and letter writing. Her approach is practical rather than 'chalk and talk'. Typically participants work on samples of their own writing throughout the session to reinforce their own good habits as well as eradicate the bad ones.
Before becoming a trainer, Lou was a freelance editor and PR consultant for eight years. He has worked for 25 years in international media and senior, global corporate communications positions in Canada, the UK and Hong Kong. He has worked in the banking, government and telecommunications sectors and as a consultant, trainer and coach specialises in media training and helping leader’s develop and deliver vision and strategy. His strengths lie in helping clients be more effective and passionate communicators. He worked for CBC Television for 8 years and then presented the news in Hong Kong prior to the handover. He worked for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council handling an international strategic media brief over the handover. He has 10 years in the banking sector as a global communications head and understands the pressures CEOs work with everyday. Mark’s clients have included: Standard Chartered Bank, Credit Suisse, the Hong Kong Government and a range of SMEs and start-ups. Mark has a BA in Sociology, an MA in journalism and an MBA from Henley Management College. He enjoys film making, travelling, detective novels and cooking. He latterly served as the Chief Instructor at UK’s Defence Media Operations Centre (DMOC), responsible for media relations and communication training and doctrine development across the UK Ministry of Defence. During this time he served as the Press Director for UK Armed Forces in Basrah, Iraq and Lashkah Gar, Afghanistan. More recently he has trained and facilitated media campaigns for various governmental and non-governmental organisations, including the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights, the United Nations and the government of the United Arab Emirates, working in areas from Kabul to Mogadishu. Jem also has an academic background in strategic communication, public diplomacy and public relations, with a diploma in PR (highest industry standard), a Masters degree in International Relations from Cambridge University and a Masters degree in Security Studies from St Andrews University. With a strong customer service background from several years in the airline industry, Sam is broadening her skills to studying the media. Entering into her third year of a media degree, specialising in documentary and film, Sam is keen to bring the eyes of the world on those less fortunate by using a strong interest and talent in photography. He works with individuals and teams to achieve personal growth, development and ultimately add greater value to their role. James has extensive experience in cross-cultural management development having designed and delivered programmes around the world.
